Installing and setting up FDN (FileDownloader)
Q: I Have problems installing FileDownloader
A: Make sure you are trying to install the latest version of File Downloader.
If you experience the same problem again, feel free to contact us. Preferably by email. Send us your computer configuration and your Windows version. If it’s possible, send us the screenshot of your desktop.
Q: I am worried about the safety of this program and of all data on my computer
A: FileDownloader is absolutely safe. If you are using FireWall, you need to let the program connect to our server only, using two ports. Port 80/TcpIP for data transferring and port 443/TcpIP for safe authorization. You may also activate SSL in program settings.
Q: After I started the program, an invitation to some sort of test appeared. What is that?
A: Every user has to pass this test. It is made, to find out the best options for program operating, at your computer. After the test is finished, you will get the choice of several options. If you have difficulties, deciding which option to choose, just choose the default one. You will be able to run the test at any time, using the FILE menu.
Q: I passed the test, but there are no options available. What shall I do?
A: There are several ways of solving the problem
- Possibly, you should use proxy server, to work thru the internet. You may ask your provider for this information.
- Possibly, there is a FireWall or an AntiVirus software installed on your system, which blokes the program. The easiest way to figure it out, is to switch the AntiVirus temporary and run the test again. If you pass the test successfully, add FDN to the list of permitted programs in your FireWall and AntiVirus.
- May be, you don’t have an access to our server. Contact your network administrator (provider).
Q: What do these tabs means?
A: In Query – the list of downloaded files and files ready to download.
Finished – as soon as file gets downloaded, it will be transferred to the Finished folder.
Usenet – this bookmark gives an access to Usenet Binaries, the description is available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet. We make sure to index the information in Usenet, to give you the opportunity for selecting and downloading the information you need.
Q: Do I have to specify my real e-mail?
A: Your e-mail is used for your password recovery. If you specify the wrong e-mail and lose the password to your account, it will be impossible to recover it.
Q: What password do I have to specify during registration?
A: You have to come up with a NEW password, which will be used in FDN. This password has nothing to do with the password of your e-mail address.
Downloading
Q: How do I add links for downloading?
A: Copy the specified links into the buffer. In program, open the File menu -> Add links. Insert links from the buffer. It is possible to insert links quickly, straight into the program.
Q: What systems do you support?
A: We support the majority of the most popular file hosting. The full list is available in program.
Q: The program takes credits first and then, starts downloading. Why is that?
A: As soon as user asks for a file, we start downloading it. Not looking at, whether you will download the file completely, or a part of it, we shall download it completely anyway. So, obviously, we charge for the entire file. If you will resume downloading, you won’t get charged for it. Re-downloading file within 24 hours from the first download is free.
Q: Program waits for the second part of the file, but doesn’t download anything.
A: We don’t store files at our server, we download it again for users.
During the download process, any mistakes or errors may take place; we don’t have any control over them. If the file gets into the waiting mode, it means that one of its parts is not available at our server, at the moment. Just wait, the program will find the necessary part and resume downloading.
Q: File doesn’t download. What should I do?
A: Please, look at the file’s status. Usually, it tells all the needed information about the file. Make sure you have enough credits. Here is list of major statuses for the file:
- File exists and ready for downloading. To start downloading, select the file(s) and click the ‘Start Downloading’ button.
- File is queued. As a rule, file will start downloading in 1 minute, sometimes it may take up to 5 minutes. If the downloading didn’t start, contact our customer service and send them a link of the file, you want to download.
- Server connection error. Restart the downloading. If you experience the same problem over again, we recommend you change the settings of the program Account -> Settings -> Connection -> Type. Wait for 30 seconds and restart downloading.
- File was removed from the file hosting. Downloading is impossible. You may check the file, by inserting this address in the address line of your browser. If the file will be found, check if the link was added correctly to the program.
- One of our servers is temporary closed for maintance. Wait for several hours and restart downloading.
- You don’t have enough credits for downloading. Buy the needed amount of credits.
Q: I download faster directly, then by using your software! Why?
A: Sometime, we have over several hundreds of downloads at the same time. So, the download speed may sometimes be lower, then downloading directly.
Q: I download a lot and I have a Premium for my favorite file hosting. What can you say about that?
A: We support different systems, so if you would like to download anything from not one of your favorite file hosting, we will be glad to help you.
Usenet
Q: What is UseNet?
A: USENET NEWS (
watch the information on history of UseNet) - is a system for teleconferences between the social groups in Internet. It may sometimes be called - news. Close analog of the teleconferences are “echos” in FIDO web.
From the user’s point of view, UseNet looks like an advertising board, where any topic on any subject may be found. This board is available throughout the computer, just like an e-mail. By sitting in front of your computer, you may find any information you need or ask any question. Obviously, all the topics need lots of space on computer’s hard drives, so they don’t get stored forever. They get deleted, periodically, to make free space for new ones.
Q: What does it have to do with software, games, movies and music?
A: The thing is, that not a single government in the world can stop the data transferring, this fact is used. If we take one file and separate it to 10000 different parts, not one of these parts will carry any forbidden information. So, it may be transferred easily. As the result, the special group of, so called, binaries appeared. Every 24 hours, the amount of traffic gets close to several terabytes of new games for PC, XBOX, PlayStation, Nintendo, MP3, DivX, XVid, latest versions of commercial software and much more.
Q: Where I can look at the list of available files?
A: FileDownloader uses the information provided by the newsgroup.net web-site, it is available in ‘UseNet’ section (in FileDownloader). FileDownloader lets you view the entire list and search in the archive.
Q: For how long the files are being stored?
A: Up to 60 days.
Q: What is the amount of data available for download?
A: The medium sized database includes over 30.000 (thirty thousand) Gigabytes!!!
Q: How can I get an access?
A: Download and install the free FileDownloader client and complete free registration.
Q: What does the FileDownloader service give me?
A: Special software lets you search the database, helps you downloading files and puts all the small parts in one complete file.
Q: I added new link from the UseNet section and it says "preparing is in progress". How long will it take?
A: Depends on the loading of the server, usually it takes up to 3 minutes.
Q: Preparing status changed to download percentage from UseNet. How long will it take?
A: Depends on the size of the file, may take up to 30 minutes.
Q: It says ‘File is queued’ and the numbers are shown (4/8)
A: You will have to wait, you are the fourth in line of 8 files.
Q: The download percentage is now 100, it says ‘checking for errors’ now. How long will it take?
A: Depends on the size of the file. For files of several gigabytes, it may take up to 30 minutes.
Charges
Q: What is the charge for using FDN?
A: The software is free. You pay 1 credit for every downloaded megabyte. The minimum size of file is 1mb. The cost is: 20 credits – 0.01$ (1 cent). For example, the cost of downloading the file of 99.45mb is 0.05$ (5 cents).
Q: It means, I pay for every megabyte, not depending on how much do I download?
A: Yes! The size of each file will be calculated as following: 99.45mb equals 100mb.
Q: So what is the difference between FileDownloader and buying Premium account, you have to pay anyway!
A: It very simple. By buying the Premium Account, you pay more than 10$ and have the opportunity to download up to 75GB. Its over 2.5Gb every 24 hours. If you are a big fan of downloading, you definitely need a Premium Account. But, due to the statistics, the major amount of users, download just the files they really need. So, there is a FileDownloader for them. Here is a simple example: let’s say, you download up to 500mb every day (which is quite a lot), you get 500*30=15GB per month. 15GB will cost you (15*0.5$) 7.5$ a month, which is 25% cheaper then Premium. In reality, the number can be even smaller. Besides, you may download from any file-hosting, that we support, which makes the program very economical, comparing to Premium account for each separate hosting.
Q: I’ve bought 2000 credits, but managed to spend just 600. What is going to happen with the change?
A: There is no credit expiration date, you may continue using your credits at any time you want.
Q: I paid the money, but the credit is the same. What should I do?
A: First of all, try restarting the program. If it doesn’t help, you need to contact the customer service. Please use the link in the program (under the menu, ‘Customer service” link). Make sure to send the information about your payment:
- For credit card – Name and Surname on the credit card and the date of payment
- For PayPal – your login and the date of payment.
